Jack Nicholson turns 89 on April 22, 2026 — and his life remains a mix of electric movie moments, headline romances and rare public appearances. From Neptune City to Oscars and courtside seats, his story still fascinates. Read on to discover the full story!

Early sparks

Born in Neptune City, N.J., in 1937, Nicholson skipped college and took odd jobs — lifeguard, theater assistant — before moving to Los Angeles. His on-screen debut came in 1956 on TV and his first film role arrived with 1958's The Cry Baby Killer. A mailroom audition at MGM pushed him toward acting classes and local theater.

Breakout and accolades

His big break was Easy Rider (1969), followed by landmark turns in Chinatown, The Shining, Batman, A Few Good Men and Something’s Gotta Give. He won three Oscars: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Terms of Endearment and As Good as It Gets, and later accepted lifetime honors like the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
